Israel’s $10bn defence budget signals a long war and a Greater Israel push, analyst says
Videobeschreibung:
Israel is digging in for the long-haul with its all-out military aggression targeting several countries, as it faces more isolation in the region, an expert in the Middle East said.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Mohamad Elmasry from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies said Israel’s latest budget, which amounts to $271 billion – the largest in its history – reflects its intention to fight many wars in different fronts.
“Historically of course, the US provides Israel with a very large sum of military funding every year amounting to $3.8 billion. That number actually goes up during wartime,” Elmasry said.
“But I think that there may be a recognition inside Israel that things may start to change. The American political landscape is changing. More and more Americans are not only critical of Israel, but also critical of American support for Israel.”
The latest budget, he said, signals “that Israel does not view itself as being at the end of a war, or wars, is it were. But maybe in the middle or close to the beginning.
“I think they recognise that there’s going to be a very long-term war, or several sets of wars” from Syria, Lebanon to the Palestinian territories, as well as Iran, in order for Israel to make its vision of a Greater Israel happen, Elmasry added.
