Taylor said Trump has always balanced competing instincts for both a deal and decisive military force, but noted Iran feels „very confident“ it can outlast the US and has demonstrated it does not need to make major concessions.
Media tied Trump’s pivot to $100 oil and Wall Street fears, while regional allies warned of a „failed state“ and Iran dismissed talks as „negotiating with yourselves.“
The panel agreed that while Trump faces pressure from his anti-war base and rising fuel prices, and Gulf states want the threat dismantled, Israel’s desire for regime change complicates any exit. Bandow questioned whether Trump is willing to tell Netanyahu to stop when he wants to, while Taylor concluded that neither side has softened its positions, making a deal difficult to reach at this moment. As Trump simultaneously sends more troops to the region while pursuing back-channel diplomacy via Pakistan, the war’s direction remains uncertain.
