GCC urges halt to Iran attacks at UNSC, calls for role in diplomacy
Videobeschreibung:
The Gulf Cooperation Council has made its strongest intervention yet at the United Nations Security Council, demanding that Iran halt its attacks, that maritime corridors be protected, and that the GCC be included in all discussions, talks, and agreements with Iran. Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani told the Council that Iranian attacks against Gulf nations are „illegal, pre-planned and aggressive,“ targeting civilian infrastructure, vital facilities, and residential areas. The GCC Secretary General warned that Iran has crossed all red lines, effectively blocking maritime corridors that are the „lifeline of the global economy,“ with 400 million barrels of oil removed from the global market since the war began. Before the conflict, 20 percent of global crude oil and LNG passed through the Strait of Hormuz, but that has now dropped to just 5 percent of normal levels, with the Bab el-Mandeb Strait also threatened by Iran-aligned Houthis. The GCC emphasised that it is paying the highest price in a war between the US and Iran and can no longer remain silent or sidelined, insisting its interests be reflected in any peace settlement. The bloc highlighted its economic significance, representing over $2 trillion in GDP, 33 percent of global oil reserves, and 21 percent of global natural gas reserves.
