Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz is disrupting approximately 30 percent of global energy supplies, including oil, gas and fertilisers critical to world agriculture. The GCC has warned that Tehran is now charging vessels for passage through the waterway, which Al Etaibi says violates international law guaranteeing freedom of navigation.

Mortazavi suggests the White House underestimated Iran’s capacity to weaponise the strait, despite warnings from regional allies. The blockade’s effects are expected to ripple through global supply chains in the coming months, impacting countries from Australia to Kenya.
